How To Buy The Best HDTV
by Richard J Runion
Buying the best HDTV involves more than just going to a superstore, and narrowing down on a size, checking the model selected for its picture quality, and giving the salesperson your cash. This way you'll never know whether you have selected the highest definition picture available. Also, will the hi-def DVD you intend to buy fit the HDTV you already have?
"Buy in haste and repent at leisure" seems to be the rule, as far as buying a HDTV is concerned.
Three types of HDTVs are available: HD-ready it displays standard-definition programs it needs external source like a cable box or satellite receiver to get digital channels, integrated HDTV comes with an built-in ASTC digital tuner it doesn't require additional equipments as in the case of HDTV-ready but need to be connected to a roof antenna. The third one Digital Cable Ready DCR-or plug-and-play, you have to plug in a digital card from a cable/satellite company directly into TV.
EDTVs (enhanced definition TV), offer lower resolutions. For a HDTV a minimum of 1280 x 720 pixels or little points of light means your choice is a genuine HDTV.
You need to ensure the HDTV has at least one HDMI connection port that supports 1080p and HDCP. the connection and protocol should enable you to plug in Blue-Ray or HD-DVD DVD player and to view copy protected broadcasts.
You also have to consider the ideal viewing distance. The recommended distance of viewing is 9 feet, for a 46" HD TV. The bigger the screen, the lower is the resolution, and hence, the greater the distance you sit from the screen. This is a bit subjective, and you should decide your comfort level, and buy a screen size in accordance with the layout and size of the room in which you plan to keep the HD TV, at your house.
LCD HDTVs are likely to be brighter than plasma type and costs more per inch. Sets like huge, boxy, rear projections available are cheap but lack brightness. According to experts "tube" type HDTVs have the best picture but hauling and installing will involve at least five people.
HDTVs offer some or all of three resolutions: 480p, 720p, 1080i. Some of the latest HDTVs are offering 1080p, but they cost more. Make sure your choice comes with at least 720p and 1080i capability. Generally channels that offer HD broadcast in 720p.
To avoid damaging your HDTV in transit always have it installed by a professional technician. Professional technicians use proper equipment to safely move and install large televisions and they work in teams.
